In April of 2017 I spent two weeks in a campervan working and travelling across the deserts of Utah and Arizona in the USA. I was inspired by my mum's memories of her roadtrip around the area in the late 1970s, and wanted to see - and explore - the landscape for myself.
Before I left, mum gifted me the map that she used on her journey - highlighted with the roads she'd taken and the places that she'd stopped. Rather than do too much research myself I decided to follow mum's exact footsteps, some 40 years later. During the two weeks I drove over 2,500 kms while visiting seven National Parks in three states (though I drove in four), and I fell in love with every single one of them. I have grand intentions to return to each for further exploration, but until then, I will just have to rely on my photos for memories.
On day one, I flew into Las Vegas and collected my van. I had booked late and the only remaining size was large enough to sleep four people, but there was a certain excitement in driving six feet off the ground; I felt indestructible (probably a good thing, given that the last time I drove on the right side of the road I wrote off my hire car...)
I left Vegas, stopped off at a Walmart to purchase petrol and supplies, then spent the rest of the day driving the 250 kms to the small town of Springdale on the outskirts of Zion National Park.
